Bicycle camping!

Once Mike's returned to me, safe and sound from Arkansas, I'd like to do an overnight trip or weekend trip by bike. I know some of you on the F-list have experience with this, so any tips would be appreciated.

As for the route, that's still being planned. I've looked at a couple, but I'm open to suggestions. Ideally, we'd bike about 60 or so miles. And, I'd prefer a northern trip over a southern one.

Maybe you guyses could do a rail/bike trip. Take a train for about 50 miles (shore bound or maybe up the Delaware) and then do a bike loop once you reach a cool area. Locally 50 mile bike ride gets you to Green Lane - but that is kinda lame and not really a vacation. Where are you thinking of?

i thought about that, too! i guess it's going to come down to how much time Mike can take off--which is really none since he's out of vacation.

we also might try to motorcycle camp, which would be a little easier on the muscles and give us a chance to go a lot farther.

The Delaware Water Gap area might be cool for a motorcycle trip....

Get some panniers to carry your gear in.

Go over what you bring and make sure it isn't too much weight.

Load your bike up with all the gear and do a few rides around home to make sure you can handle the load well.

Don't get so hung up on the destination that you make yourself miserable tryingto get there, it's all about the journey.

...if I'd followed those a bit more, I might still be gone on my trip.

i've got one of these. while i didn't bike with all my gear in it when i went down to OC, NJ last Sept, i did use the trunk pack on the ride and it was so nice. with the pannier supports i recently got, it should rock out.

he currently insists on using a backpack, but i'm breaking him of that idea slowly and surely.

i've been reading this guy's stuff lately. some of it's useful, some of it's just annoying, and some if it i skip entirely... but it's also mostly interesting.

That should do.

A backpack is doable, but it makes you much hotter and less comfortable. I'm moving away from a backpack on my commutes.

once i switched to a pannier (and a grocery-bag pannier at that), i was amazed at how much more comfortable my ride was!

Grocery bag panniers are nice.

I just got a set of these (http://www.ortlieb.com/_prod.php?lang=en&produkt=backrollerplus), but haven't used them yet.

those are sweet. my neighbor-friend (nitro Joe above) has some Ortliebs, i think. they're bottomless!

So how does he keep stuff in them?
