Under the cut, ten snips of lyrics NOW WITH CLUES, all from the iPod on the way in last Monday. An interesting mix, for sure.

If you're completely stumped, try Googling--BUT indicate that you had to use the Internets for help.

1. But if you fight and if you fail, don't fall back into yourself
You can fall back on me

Hint: David Lowery does vocals and guitar for this band.

2. I'm gonna break it down and beg like James
Please, please, please.

Hint: Their 1989 hit song was based on a quote from a Vietnamese prostitute in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and took a sample from Mass Production's Firecracker.

3. I'm gonna get up in the morning, chug-a-lug a coffee
Get on my bike and ride away
Find me a beach with a nice little break and I'm gonna catch wave after wave after wave

Hint: He's big in Australia, which would explain why a number of his songs center around surfing.

4. Been mainlining bad thoughts
Been drinking things I wish I'd not
Intoxicated with sad songs
Who will forgive you when I'm gone?

Hint: This band covered "I'm Looking Through You" on the I Am Sam soundtrack.

5. I've been staying up and drinking in a late night establishment
Telling strangers personal things

Hint: This Russian artist's musical style has drawn many comparisons to fellow singer-pianists Fiona Apple and Tori Amos.

6. I don't know how to speak to you
I don't know how to trust you
I don't kow how to live for you
I don't know how to love you

Hint: Jane-of-all-trades, you're probably much more familiar with her films and modeling. Her debut album (and, sadly, only album) shares its title with a famous piece of literature from the Middle Ages.

7. I'll give you a four-leaf clover
Take all the worry out of your mind

Correctly guessed! "Let My Love Open the Door", Townshend

8. This storm it came up strong
It shook the trees
And blew away our fear
I couldn’t even hear

Correctly guessed! "Half a World Away", REM

9. 'cause first you're ripe
and then you're rotten
don't stop 'til you get to the bottom

Hint: During 2003, he teamed up with Ben Kweller and Ben Folds for a side project entitled The Bens.

10. You can’t fool me
I saw you when you came out
You got your momma’s taste
But you got my mouth

Hint: His former band scored a huge hit in 1998 with a song about getting an abortion.

Is #10 Ben Folds? I don't recognize the song lyric, but the hint sounds familiar. If it is who I think it is, then my freakin' seven hour trip to Boston featuring nonstop Ben Folds will have been for naught.

And #1 has to be either Cracker or Camper, but I can't pin that down either.

#10: you've got the correct artist. It's from the newest album, i think.

#1:CVB, One of these days.

I know very little CVB, aside from a brief flirtation where I tried to like them because I was dating someone who did. Ah, the folly of youth.

So as a related aside: this last trip was maybe the sixth or seventh long (6+ hour) road trip I've had with R&A. They have, to my recollection, only ever listened to the following three artists in my presence: Rufus Wainwright, Ben Folds, and Cake. Seriously. I like the former and am neutral towards the two latter, but that's a pretty narrow range of tastes. This was the first trip where I actually enjoyed the Ben Folds, so maybe I like his newer stuff more than what they played three or four years ago.

i admit--i need to be in a mood for both CVB and Ben Folds. CVB is sometimes whiny, sometimes annoying. Ben Folds... well, sometimes i just want to jam and i don't want to listen to story-songs and ballads and whatever else.

#2 is 2 Live Crew. I know the song that took the line from the Kubrick film is "Me So Horny." Is the lyric from there?

no--the lyric had its time in the limelight with the animated banana and the donkey. it's "Let me ride that donkey". every time it comes on the iPod, i smile.

#6 is...

Milla, Gentleman Who Fell, from The Divine Comedy!

I love love love that album. Love it. I'm so sorry she's never made more.
